The Tampa Bay Estuary Program was created by Congress in 1991 to assist the community in restoring and protecting Florida's largest open-water estuary. Although it is surrounded by a rapidly growing metropolitan area, the bay's water quality has improved in recent decades, thanks to limits on wastewater discharges, dredging, and urban runoff. Today, the bay's scenic tapestry of sandy beaches, mangrove forests and underwater seagrass meadows supports vibrant fishing, boating, and other recreational activities.
Proceeds from the Tampa Bay Estuary license plate help sustain this remarkable recovery by directly involving citizens in bay stewardship through a community grants program. Eligible projects include habitat restoration, pollution prevention or environmental education initiatives. For more information, visit www.tbep.org
